My Story
Thank you for visiting the virtual home of Calm in a Storm LCSW, PLLC my private practice devoted to helping people like yourself successfully weather some of life’s stormiest experiences.
Folks often ask me how (and why) I was drawn to such an emotionally strenuous line of therapy. In the Broadway musical Pippen, there’s a song that says, “Rivers belong where they can ramble. Eagles belong where they can fly.” Me? Somewhere along the way I discovered I have a gift for being a positive, calming, and transformative presence in difficult times. It may not be very lyrical, but it’s true, and it makes me happy to help people in this way.
Over the years I’ve put that gift to good use as a hospice social worker, bereavement counselor, dementia-care trainer, and caregiver to a daughter with special needs.
I do what I do by creating a safe space for my clients. A place of honesty, empathy and compassion. Therapists are taught early in their training to meet the client where the client is. Which means no judging, no agendas. From the very first meeting, I strive to create a therapeutic relationship that is responsive to each client’s individual needs and allows them to feel comfortable doing the vital work that leads to real progress.
If you would like me to support you on your grief journey, or help you become a more confident caregiver, please contact me for a complimentary consultation.
P.S. For those curious about my last name – Au – it’s pronounced ‘awe". I heard somewhere that when my ancestors came through Ellis Island they were being charged a “consonant tax.” So they dropped the consonants and went with the two vowels that were left. Who knows if it’s true. But that’s my story.
